The United States Mint produces commemorative national medals as authorized
by the United States Congress. These medals commemorate historic events
and people significant to the United States. For a historical figure to
appear on a national medal, he or she must have demonstrated superior
achievements that have benefited the United States or the world.
Official national medals are cast of gold. When appropriate, and approved
by U.S. legislation, the U.S. Mint may produce bronze duplications of
national medals for sale to the general public. The U.S. Mint also produces
list medals as part of a continuing series, such as Presidents of the
United States, Secretaries of the Treasury, Directors of the Mint, and
Historic Buildings of the United States.
