Autographs, like stamps and coins, are valuable pieces of any collection.
However, there are certain autographs that are valued above all others.
These items, such as those signed by former American presidents, are popular
and sought-after by collectors all over the world. Here is a look at some of
the most famous and most expensive autographs:
Jesse James was one of the most famous outlaws in American history, making
any signature or personal possession of his very valuable. Due to his
outlawry, Jesse James rarely signed anything, but there is one photograph
of Jesse James that includes his autograph, which is valued at $52,000.
Though he contributed vast amounts of knowledge to the world of science,
there is a well-known photograph of Albert Einstein sticking his tongue
out to the camera. Einstein himself requested several copies of this iconic
photo, and there are a few that contain his personal signature. Many forgers
have tried to sell this autographed photo, but a real version was eventually
found and sold for $75,000.
Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe
Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe ruled different areas of America’s
favorite pastimes—DiMaggio was a baseball legend and Monroe was
a Hollywood goddess—but their marriage made them undeniable icons.
They both signed a baseball, which sold for over $191,000, making it the
most expensive baseball memorabilia ever sold at the time.
Abraham Lincoln is known for many presidential acts, but his Emancipation
Proclamation was one of his greatest. He signed 48 copies of the Proclamation,
and only 26 have survived. One of these autographed documents was sold
in 2010 for $3.7 million.
As seen above, presidential autographs are highly valued. In 2012, a signed copy of
Acts of Congress was sold at auction for almost $10 million. This book was owned and signed
by America’s first president, George Washington.
