Stamps are among the most popular collectibles in the world, and stamp
collecting itself is remarkably easy to get into. You don’t need
a lot of money to start collecting stamps or even an expert knowledge
of stamps to build an impressive (and valuable) collection. That being
said, if you’re interested in
purchasing collectible stamps you might like to know about the history of stamps and why people started
collecting stamps in the first place.
The Birth of the Postage Stamp
In 1837, the British Postmaster General introduced the “Post Office
Reforms” whereby mail could be sent anywhere in the British Isles
at the same rate. The postage was to be paid by the sender, whereas before
the addressee was responsible for paying delivery costs upon receipt of
the letter. The first government-printed postage stamps were born on May
6, 1840 when the new reforms were approved and enacted.
Stamp Collecting Begins
It didn’t take long after the first stamps were issued for people
to start collecting them. However, the motives behind these collections
weren’t necessarily for monetary gain. For example, in 1841 a woman
placed an advertisement in the London Times in which she requested help
collecting stamps to be used for papering a bedroom wall. These
stamp collectors were soon known as philatelists, although it would be some time before
anyone would realize how valuable stamps could or would become later on.
